Kronborg Castle

Explore history at Kronborg Castle

UNESCO World Heritage Castle in Denmark

When you think of Elsinore, Kronborg Castle immediately comes to mind. The two are inseparable, with Kronborg standing as the city’s iconic landmark. Built between 1574 and 1585 by King Frederick II, Kronborg is one of Northern Europe’s most important Renaissance castles and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can dive into history within its walls—meet the legendary Danish hero Holger the Dane in the castle’s casemates, wander through the grand halls, and imagine what life was like for nobles centuries ago. Take a stroll around the fortress walls and gaze out over the Øresund Strait towards Sweden. Kronborg Castle hosts a variety of events and tours year-round. M/S Maritime Museum

Discover maritime history

A stonethrow away from Kronborg

Just a short walk from Kronborg Castle, you’ll find the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark. The museum is cleverly built into the old dry dock in a striking, award-winning design by the architectural firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). If you love architecture, the blend of raw concrete, large glass facades, and aluminum-clad walkways is a sight to behold. Originally part of Kronborg, the museum moved here in 2013, offering a fascinating journey through centuries of maritime history up to today’s globalized maritime culture.
